About Rtanj

They call it mystical.
They call it the Serbian “pyramid”.

It rises from the plain in the shape of a trapezoid, wide and massive, while at the top it narrows into an almost regular cup, so there is a belief that the mountain Rtanj is actually a pyramid. In any case, it is a natural phenomenon. Full of legends from ancient times, Rtanj stands out for its various specificities and is at the top of the list of mystical sights in Serbia.

The almost perfect shape of the pyramid, unusual energy fields, similarities with the Mayan and Egyptian pyramids, numerous underground tunnels… these are just some of the reasons why different stories are told about the origin of this mountain. Energy and magnetic fields are believed to have a healing effect, very beneficial to human health.

The mountain lake and hidden passages, underground streams, caves and caverns makes Rtanj ideal for adventure and exploration. The best way to experience the magic of this mountain is to take a walk, climb to the mountaintop Šiljak (1565 meters) and enjoy the incredible view.

Rtanj represents a phenomenon which attracts more and more tourists, scientists, mountaineers and adventurers each year. Rtanj has been particularly interesting to naturalists since ancient times – Josif Pančić, Jovan Cvijić, Matvejev explored Rtanj.

It is also known for Rtanj tea, the Ramonda flower (“Ramonda serbica”) and many protected plant and animal species. Recently, botanical research has shown that there are about 200 types of wild self-sown plants on its slopes. Due to the diversity of flora and fauna and the large number of rare and endemic species of plants and animals, the Rtanj mountain was declared a Special Nature Reserve in 2018.

“There is no mountain and no mountain peak in Serbia which makes such a deep impression on the observer as Rtanj with Šiljak. Calmness, grandeur and symmetry are combined. Rising majestically in isolation, it rules the environment and looks like a leader. There is something impressive about it, like great personalities.” (Jovan Cvijić)
